Effects of nonlinear sorption on the diffusion of benzene and dichloromethane from two air-dry soils
Article Abstract:
The utilization of transient diffusion experiments for evaluating the result of nonlinear BET sorption on benzene and dichloromethane atmospheric emission rates is discussed. Apparent diffusivity was determined by a diffusion model which presupposes linear local-equilibrium sorption between the solid vapor and solid phases. The effects of the assumption and the diffusion retardation factor obtained from diffusion and nonlinear sorption experiments were theoretically determined. The necessity of extremely diluted contamination levels for the effective application of the retarded model was established.

Use of tedlar bags in VOC testing and storage: evidence of significant VOC losses
Article Abstract:
Tedlar is widely used for sampling and storing liquids and gases containing organic compounds because of its good non-sorbing properties. However, some studies suggest that use of Tedlar leads to significant losses in organic compounds. To determine whether there are leaks in Tedlar bags, homemade Tedlar bags were filled with liquids and gases containing volatile organic compounds (VOC) and were measured for VOC losses. The decrease in VOC losses was not consistent with time, suggesting that VOC losses were not caused by leaks in the bags.

Static and dynamic headspace analysis of volatile organic compounds in soils
Article Abstract:
Techniques for the routine analysis of volatile organic compound-contaminated soils were evaluated. Five different soils were analyzed by a developed approach based om static headspace analysis and the EPA-specified purge and trap methods. The resulting analyte recovery and precision of both methods were compared. Headspace analysis was assessed to have significantly better recovery than the EPA methods.
