Ethics of AZT studies in poorer countries attacked
Article Abstract:
Public Citizen has attacked a US-funded group of studies in developing countries that test the efficacy of affordable AZT treatments in preventing maternal transmission of HIV, using a control group of nontreated mothers. The NIH says the studies were approved by US and host-country review boards.

Bringing AZT to poor countries
Article Abstract:
A treatment called protocol 076 that uses AZT has proven effective in reducing the transmission of HIV from pregnant women to their babies, but 076 is not practical for use in developing countries. Researchers are using spin-off trials based on 076 to find new ways to prevent HIV transmission.
