Explaining te differences in domestic and cross-boundary strategic alliances in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry

Article Abstract:

A survey of 83 domestic and 101 cross-border pharmaceutical/biotech industry alliances reveals that distinct attributes differentiate the two kinds of alliances and that significantly different motivations explain domestic and cross-border alliances. The study reveals that certain types of alliances progress more smoothly than others and that strategic behavior theory and synergy may better explain strategic alliances better than transaction costs theory or mimetic theory.

Putting some numbers on the TRIPS pharmaceutical debate

Article Abstract:

The social and economic costs of developing countries in protecting pharmaceutical patents are discussed with respect to the GATT negotiations over the trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights. Specifically, two market models are used to compare the impact of patent systems and regimes with no patent protection. In addition, the effects of retroactive and non-retroactive patent legislation are discussed.

Effects of the monopolistic patenting of medicine in Italy since 1978

Article Abstract:

The impact of Italy's monopolistic law on medicine patents is investigated. The law, which was introduced in 1878, was evaluated with respect to four economic indices. They include the price of medicines and the state of national laboratories in the pharmaceutical market. The influence of patents on the capacity for drug innovations and on the trade balance of Italy's pharmaceutical industry are also assessed.
