Gene perplexes epilepsy researchers
Article Abstract:
Richard Myers and Anna-Elina Lebesjoki isolated the gene that causes EPM1, a rare type of epilepsy, and found that the expressed protein was already known as cystatin B, an inhibitor of certain detrimental protein enzymes. The link between the lack of cystatin B and the disease was a surprise.

Protein test favors BSE-CJD link
Article Abstract:
Scientists have discovered a biochemical similarity between BSE, or mad cow disease, and a new variant of CJD called vCJD. The discovery could lead to the development of a test for the early detection of vCJD.
