Hughes network expands by a big leap

An increase in the value of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's portfolio to almost $9.7 billion has allowed it to expand the number of investigators it funds by 25%. The institute has awarded 70 new grants to medical researchers.

Clinicians catch top NIH officials' attention

NIH officials are taking steps to put more focus on patient-oriented research. One campaign will attempt to improve funding of clinical research. Another effort will revise NIH peer review processes for clinical projects.
