Painting and the rise of volcanology: Sir William Hamilton's Campi Phlegraei
Article Abstract:
Sir William Hamilton's Campi Phlegraei illustrations (1776-1779) provide the most detailed volcanic activity in Southern Italy in the 18th century. Hamilton, then British envoy to the court of Naples, commissioned his personal painter, Pietro Fabris, to do some gouache paintings of Mount Vesuvius in the accepted sublime style. With Campi Phlegraei and other publications on Italian volcanoes, Hamilton was regarded as an authority on all things volcanic.
