Microemulsion of mixed chlorinated solvents using food grade (edible) surfactants

Article Abstract:

The nonideal regular mixing theory exhibited better predictive abilities for both binary and ternary chlorinated solvent mixtures than the ideal mixing rule. The latter gave a worthy approximation for binary and ternary systems, but deviations of the experimental results from the predictions were significant enough to influence the optimal surfactant system. This was gleaned from an evaluation of the microemulsions of binary and ternary chlorinated solvent systems. The resulting middle-phase microemulsions were formed using mixtures of the food grade surfactants bis(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate and sodium mono- and dimethylnaphthalene sulfonate.

Surfactants and surface remediation

Article Abstract:

A review of studies regarding the behavior of surface-active compounds in the subsurface environment is presented. This was done to evaluate their applicability to nonaqueous-phase liquids remediation in the saturated zone of the subsurface. It was found that an understanding of environmental chemistry, hydrology and transport mechanisms of surface-active compounds was necessary for the successful utilization of subsurface injection of surfactants in aquifer remediation.
