U.K. universities: the end of equality

Article Abstract:

Sir Ron Dearing's report recommends an end to Britain's tradition of free college tuition, for higher government support of elite universities, and several other changes in basic science funding. Student lobbyists denounced the plan as retreat into a training, not an education, system.

Universities feel the heat of competition

Higher education in the UK has become more competitive since 1992, when the polytechnic colleges were given university status. Government funding is based on research and teaching effectiveness, putting pressure on universities to improve quality and efficiency.

Declining enrollments, funds threaten small departments

Article Abstract:

The UK physics community is concerned that declining enrollment and stricter requirements for government funding jeopardize physics departments in small universities across the country. Courses and departments already closed are listed.
