New York courts seek 'neutral' experts

Article Abstract:

Three New York judges are establishing a panel of nonpartisan scientific experts, to eliminate costly battles of experts in product-liability cases. The panel will establish cause-and effect tests, concentrating on immune- system dysfunction, pertaining to thousands of breast-implant cases.

New studies trace the impact of tobacco advertising

Article Abstract:

Two studies described by behavioral epidemiologist John Pierce indicate that tobacco advertising encourages teenagers to start smoking. Tobacco industry spokespersons question the objectivity of the study. The views of scientists who reviewed the studies were mixed.

Search for a killer: focus shifts from fat to hormones

Scientists have ruled out high-fat diet as a risk factor for breast cancer and are focusing attention on the effects of estrogen. An apparent epidemic since the mid-1980s may be a one-time bulge of new cases discovered by the increased use of mammography.
