Oil rig sinking blocked in Europe, accepted in U.S. Gulf coast

Article Abstract:

European and US environmentalists expressed different views on oil rig sinking at sea. Royal Dutch/Shell's project to sink the Brent Spar oil rig in Jun. 1995 was blocked by European environmentalists. Meanwhile, US oil companies have already sunk around 95 platforms since 1985 in the Mexican Gulf with state and federal 'rigs-to-reefs' programs. Despite their differences, both parties agreed that loosening such equipment from the ocean floor posed problems.

Enforcement cuts hit by corporate attorney

Article Abstract:

Corporate environmental attorney Judson Starr decried waning federal enforcement of environmental laws in a speech made during a symposium of the Environmental Law Institute on Jan. 23, 1996. He warned that reduced EPA funding levels on congressional appropriations for enforcement will reduce corporate willingness to follow environmental regulations. He added that reduced funds would lessen the authority of corporate health and safety officers.
