Panel recommends shifts in EPA research priorities, resources

Article Abstract:

A long-awaited report from the National Research Council (NRC) calls for some fundamental changes in the Environmental Protection Agency's research programs. The NRC is urging the EPA to conduct environmental researches that will solve problems, especially future environmental problems. The often-criticized EPA is being asked to focus its studies on the correlation of animal data to human risk, measurement of the different human population responses to the same levels of toxic chemical exposure, and provide a more comprehensive exposure assessment for humans and ecosystems alike.

A testing deadline for endocrine disrupters: EPA scrambles to develop a screening program for these complex substances

Article Abstract:

The EPA was designated by the US Congress to conduct risk assessment studies on 80,000 commercial chemicals to determine their toxic effects on human endocrine systems. EPA's risk assessment study also involves the development of a screening technique to determine the hormonal activities of industrial chemicals and to characterized the structure of endocrine disrupters. Endocrine disrupters cause infertility and deformities by mimicking the hormonal activity of estrogen.

EPA must look to the future, says Science Advisory Board

Article Abstract:

A recent report issued by the EPA Science Advisory Board predicts that the agency will be confronted by new issues on ocean ecology, ecosystems sustainability and new, nontraditional environmental stressors. The board recommended that the EPA should go beyond contemporary problems and start formulating a long-range strategy which can anticipate the challenges which may appear in the future.
