Preserving Williamsburg's cables

Article Abstract:

The cable preservation project for New York's Williamsburg Bridge specified that the cable system should withstand at least a century of corrosive environment. Inspection and testing conducted by engineers revealed that large-scale corrosion was present in a small number of wires found in areas where moisture is often present. The oils used to protect the cables have given way to oxidation and extreme heat. The rehabilitation team selected raw linseed oil as corrosion inhibitor for its ability to provide excellent corrosion protection and wire penetration.

From the 'metrication specialist.'(response to Joel Rosenblatt, Civil Engineering, Apr 1995; adoption of international measurement system by US)

Article Abstract:

Joel Rosenblatt states that the US should adopt the international measurement system as it is convenient to use and cheaper. The notion that the country's manufacturers will suffer economic stress is wrong. Such an adoption will only promote federally funded projects and make all transactions much easier in international markets.
