Resolving the scale-dependence of mineral weathering rates

Article Abstract:

Researchers from Sweden extrapolated the laboratory results from data collected from mineral weathering rates in the laboratory and in the field, with the field data having lower rates. Data from the Aitik site in northern Sweden was used as a model to investigate the scale-dependence of weathering rates.

Relative insignificance of mineral grain zeta potential to colloid transport in geochemically heterogenous porous media

Article Abstract:

Researchers from Yale University, University of Colorado and Japan's Mitsubishi Industries Ltd. investigated the use of the mineral grains zeta-potential in the colloid deposition kinetics in geochemically heterogenous and porous media and found that the method yields erroneous results.

Investigation of mechanisms contributing to slow desorption of hydrophobic organic compounds from mineral solids

Article Abstract:

This study focuses on the mechanisms contributing to the slow desorption of hydrophobic organic compounds from water-saturated mineral solids. Adsorption-retarded aqueous diffusion, micropore diffusion, high-energy micropore adsorption and micropore blockage by precipitated minerals were the mechanisms studied. A set of homogeneous silica gel and glass bead adsorbents were used to minimize the potential confounding effects of adsorbent heterogeneity.
