Sex and Repression

Article Abstract:

A recent discovery that subunits of a large protein complex are related to the mitotic chromosome condensation and segregation machinery surprised researchers. The subunits are required for dosage compensation in nematodes, a mechanism of transcriptional repression that occurs in hermaphrodites. The next phase of this research will likely involve understanding a way in which this chromosome-wide recognition has evolved.

X chromosome dosage compensation in Drosophila

Article Abstract:

Differing interpretations of C chromosome dosage compensation in Drosophila depend on whether the major defect in mls mutant males is too little X-encoded gene products or too much autosomally encoded products. Views on both sides of the controversy are presented.
