Shaking the habit
Article Abstract:
Tobacco has established a strong position as the most profitable cash crop for farmers in Kentucky and North Carolina. It is also a key source of income for many farmers in other southeastern states. There is inevitable conflict between the public health aims connected with the production and use of tobacco and the financial aims of tobacco farmers. However, there are some areas of understanding between farmers and health professionals. It is important to support tobacco farmers as they seek to diversify. This may require the involvement of churches and state and local governments.

The problem of tobacco: rather than condemning tobacco growers, people need to support small farmers by buying locally grown food
Article Abstract:
It can be argued that many tobacco farmers in the US have no alternative to growing tobacco. It is vital that they are enabled to produce a crop, or several crops, that can yield a similar income to tobacco from similar acreages. These crops must be grown locally with family and neighbourhood assistance, and there must be a reliable market for them. People should be willing to use their food expenditure to support a strong population of local farmers, thus allowing the land to thrive.

Farmers in the crossfire
Article Abstract:
The activities of anti-tobacco campaigners are posing a serious threat to the existence of family farmers in tobacco states in the US. For these farmers, tobacco is part of their cultural and economic heritage, rather than merely a cash crop. It is vital that the health community works with tobacco farmers, rather than against them, to protect both public health and the farmers.
