Smooth take-off
Article Abstract:
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey uses a software package, called Take-Off, to detect and alleviate roughness of runway pavements, and ensure smooth take-offs and landings of aircrafts. The software runs on a personal computer and simulates the aircraft's response to a pavement's profile. Take-Off includes various parameters such as, aircraft roll-out speed, payload placement, gross take-off weight and pavement profile. Pilot station and center-of-gravity accelerations are developed in response to profile and pitch data. Other measures to diminish rough spot problems are discussed.

Article Abstract:
Intergraph's Inroads Digital Terrain Modeling software was used by Psomas and Associates and Daniel Mann Johnson and Mendenhall to determine the extent of damage the Northridge earthquake had done to the floor of Oviatt Library and California State University buildings. This software allowed the two firms to justify their recommendation to rebuild the edifices that were damaged by the earthquake. The reconstruction of the new buildings had been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency on June 1997 because of justifiable results obtained from the software.

Software helps new designers make grade
Article Abstract:
Experienced computer-aided design (CAD) personnel is very important to any construction and design company. The absence of a CAD personnel can be counterproductive and detrimental to any firm but, MK Centennial in Arvada, CO, has proven it otherwise. MK Centennial firm was able to design the entire 30 mi of Colorado's E-470 highway in 18 months despite the loss of an CAD personnel. This feat was achieved by using the GeoPak Road software running on pentium-powered computers.
