Statistical approach to meeting soil cleanup goals
Article Abstract:
The confidence response goal approach in soil remediation is a cost-effective method that applies to Superfund sites as well as other sites where remediation in support of a target cleanup goal is required. The mathematical model calculates exceedances of target averages, average risk or average concentration that can be allowed in post-remediation distribution. It sets a limit on concentrations requiring remediation while ensuring that target average concentrations are met. The application of the approach at a midwestern Superfund site with 11 chemicals requiring cleanup is discussed.

Use of a risk-based hydrogeologic model to set remedial goals for PCBs, PAHs, and TPH in soils during redevelopment of an industrial site
Article Abstract:
A hydrogeologic model was used to set cleanup levels for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in subsurface soils. The study was conducted at the redevelopment of an industrial site along a Puget Sound shoreline. The model was found to be effectively demonstrate that remediation and development plans for the site can help the environment from subsurface soil chemical contaminants as well as human health.
