Article Abstract:

Manchester Metropolitan University's Manchester Manufacturing integrated graduate development scheme (IGDS) began in 1995 and has recently produced its first graduates. The scheme, a collaboration between five universities, can lead to an MSc in Manufacturing Management or Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management. IGDS is a general manufacturing programme and the courses are determined by the needs of local manufacturers.

David Brown, chairman of Motorola and of the vocational qualifications and occupational standards committee of the qualifications and curriculum authority, believes that the key skills for engineers are ICT, communication, numeracy and teamwork. To compete in a global market, he says that companies must ensure that knowledge, as well as goods and services, flow across borders.
