The Rio Earth Summit: what does it mean?
Article Abstract:
The documents signed at the Earth Summit that took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in Jun 1992 could pave the way for a worldwide environmental development and conservation program. The documents layed the framework for for various topics, such as greenhouse gas control, forest preservation and an environmental action plan for the twenty-first century. However, the Earth Summit failed to generate enough funds for the sustainable environmental development of Third World countries.

The Rio conference: a view from India
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of the Earth Summit shows significant achievements with far-reaching global environmental consequences. However, certain shortcomings have been identified, particularly in the area of financing the resources for the containment of global environmental degradation. The present Indian situation is highlighted by the continued apathy of its leaders towards science and technology.

EPA technology initiative thwarted by budget cuts

Legislators vetoed the government's request to allot $127 million for the Environmental Technology Initiative for FY 1996. Instead, they cut 60% from the program's budget, leaving it with just $20 million. The legislators said they could not see the importance of the program to environmental technology development and believe that the issue can be better addressed by the private sector.
