The Scratch Orchestra of London, England, formed in 1969 by Cornelius Cardew, Michael Parsons and Howard Skempton, is discussed, with a focus on the period between 1969 and 1971. Topics include visual influences, the influence of John Cage and Fluxus, George Brecht and LaMonte Young, multiplicity and materiality, changing direction in 1971, the Portsmouth connection, and Systems art and music.

Musician Lawrence Casserley compares his work of the 1990s with that of the 1970s from technical and philosophical perspectives. The themes are similar, but technical developments of the 1990s, particularly the development of the Signal Processing Instrument, have facilitated their implementation.
