Technology and business opportunities for small and medium enterprises in Japan: the role of research networks

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the results of 20 in-depth case studies and a survey on 407 firms in Japan was done to assess the technology requirements of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the country. The results indicate that, given the major hindrance caused by both capital and human resources on Japanese SMEs, knowledge networks and research links with outside partners have emerged as vital requirements for the next level of technology development by Japanese companies.

What kind of knowledge can a firm absorb?

Article Abstract:

An empirical analysis of the R&D contracts of the biggest research institutes and industrial companies in France was conducted to provide a definition for three basic concepts of absorptive capacity with regards to external knowledge. The results indicate that a low level of absorptive capacity inhibits cooperation in R&D while a high level leads to the assimilation of all types of knowledge through all available channels presented to a company.
