Seven encyclopedias on CD-ROMS are evaluated. These are Encyclopedia Americana, Britannica, Compton's, Microsoft Encarta, Grolier's and McGraw-Hill Multimedia Encyclopedia on Science and Technology. They contain varying degrees of text and multimedia implementations.

Doring Kindersley Multimedia's 'The Way Things Work' is an interesting and informative program for looking up topics. Unfortunately, it takes more time to use the program than to open a normal book. Moreover, it contains many careless statements and factual errors.
