A U-shaped association between home systolic blood pressure and four-year mortality in community-dwelling older men
Article Abstract:
A U-shaped association has been found to exist between home systolic blood pressure (SBP) and four-year mortality in study of 1186 older men living in the community in Japan. High and low BP were both risk factors for mortality in this group. Mechanisms underlying the association between BP and mortality differ by levels of systolic BP. It appears low SBP is perhaps not only an independent mortality risk factor but also an indicator of a subclinical noncardiovascular comorbid condition. Adjustments were may for morbidity and frailty.

Recruitment of older adults for a randomized, controlled trial of exercise advice in a general practice setting
Article Abstract:
Recruiting participants for a study on exercise advice in a general practice may require some legwork. Invitation letters to 2,878 people and subsequent screenings took place utilizing patients of two general Australian practices. At the end of 15 weeks, researchers had successfully recruited one participant for every ten people originally contacted. Exercise interventions may be biased by attracting healthy volunteers with an active lifestyle and discouraging more sedentary people.
