A qualitative study about breast cancer screening in older women: implications for research
Article Abstract:
A qualitative research was conducted to examine the factors which contribute to the low participation of women in breast cancer screening. The factors which promote underutilization were identified and classified into three, namely: women centered, system centered and physician centered barriers. Women centered barriers were attitudinal and cognitive in nature while the system-centered barriers focus more on costs and accessibility of screening service. Physician centered barriers, on the other hand, is mainly caused by negative reinforcement and patient stereotyping. Recommendations for the resolution of these problems were presented.

The efficacy of breast self-examination
Article Abstract:
Research on the efficacy of breast self-examination (BSE) showed its small yet quantifiable effect on early detection of breast cancer as determined by factors such as clinical and pathological stage as well as tumor size. Findings also revealed that since compliance with BSE requires cognitive, perceptual and motor skills, the simplification of procedural techniques and instruction will enhance reliability and acceptance of such screening modality among the elderly. Further investigation of these findings have been suggested.

Efficacy of screening for breast cancer in older women
Article Abstract:
Several studies on the effects of breast cancer screening on mortality rates were evaluated. Result showed a substantial reduction in mortality rates among women aged 45 and above with the use of screening. Since such results will be used in the formulation of screening policies, aspects of the studies such as research design and the circumstances in which they were conducted were analyzed. The results of evaluation and its implications on breast cancer screening were discussed.
