Chronic benzodiazepine use in nursing homes: effects of federal guidelines, resident mix, and nurse staffing

Article Abstract:

A nonexperimental, observational study has been carried at 16 randomly selected facilities with 1181 Medicaid-funded residents at baseline out to assess the overall prescribing and chronic use of benzodiazepine (BZ) in nursing homes relative to effects of resident mix, federal guidelines, and nurse staffing. It was found that efforts to improve the BZ use situation in this setting must deal with the need for better nurse staffing and better assessment and management of psychiatric disorders that bring the prescribing.
