State practice variations in the use of tube feeding for nursing home residents with severe cognitive impairments

Article Abstract:

This article examines regional differences in the prevalence of using tube feeding for cognitively impaired nursing home residents. Findings indicate that there are significant differences in the use of tube feeding between states and that white race and specific directives against tube feeding are negatively associated with its use.

Racial and state differences in the designation of advance directives in nursing home residents

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that the proportion of medical advance directives among nursing home residents varies significantly by race. Caucasian patients were far more likely to have advance directives in place, such as living wills, than non-whites. Between-state variations were also observed, with Ohio patients more likely to have advance directives than patients in California, New York, or Massachusetts.

A prospective study of the use of liquid oral dietary supplements in nursing homes

Article Abstract:

A study of two nursing homes reported 9 of 29 residents were served the correct number and type of supplements ordered by their physician to prevent weight loss and encourage weight gain. Only 2 residents consumed the correct dosage. The study did not investigate if the cause of the weight loss was due to inadequate staffing, lack of mealtime supervision, undiagnosed dysphagia or poor oral health.
