Chronomes: time structures within the physiological range identify early disease risk aiming at primary prevention

Article Abstract:

The findings by Pietro Cugini et al. on the role of blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) circadian rhythm in early stage Alzheimer's disease are well grounded. The altered time structure or chronome of BP and HR reported by Cugini and coworkers can serve as additional clinical tools for diagnosing diseases or for identifying risk factors. One potential application of chronome characteristics as a diagnostic tool is for detecting the disease risk syndrome circadian hyper-amplitude-tension, which is characterized by an excessive circadian BP amplitude.

Measures of disease control in Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes mellitus

Article Abstract:

Older Medicare patients with diabetes may not receive consistenly optimal care. According to medical records, many of the 5,980 patients who were at least 75 years old had elevated blood glucose levels, poor control of hypertension, and failed to take their medication properly. Diabetes control was generally better in men and those at least 85 years old. Quality improvement efforts are needed for the care of elderly diabetics.
