Alcohol consumption is negatively associated with the prevalence of coronary heart disease in the New Mexico Elder Health Survey
Article Abstract:
Alcohol intake among older people in New Mexico may protect against coronary heart disease. In a group of 883 Hispanic and non-Hispanic white elderly people, the risk of coronary heart disease was inversely related to drinking alcohol. Being male, having hypertension, or diabetes mellitus were additional strong risk factors. Although alcohol intake will not be actively encouraged, it seems to be a protective factor in the context of heart disease.
