Geographic variation in hospice use prior to death
Article Abstract:
Geographic variation in hospice use has been studied through analysis of Medicare administrative data for older Medicare enrollees who died. One hundred fifty-five of 1000 older Medicare beneficiaries who died had used hospice and the rate is significantly higher among younger persons in the group with wide geographic variation in hospice use.

Clinical, epidemiological, and policy implications of minimum data set validity
Article Abstract:
Epidemiological, clinical, and policy implications of validity of the Minimum Data Set, which the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1987 requires of all nursing homes in the US for Medicare reimbursement, are discussed. Validity, content clarity, and accuracy are required for clinical, research and policy applications. Regulating and standardizing assessment of residents is important, but an extensive document is not trivial to complete, from the point of view of the nursing home. At some point the burden of work outweighs the benefits. Nursing homes may have skilled staff available to fill out the form or may use others. More studies moving evolution of the process toward optimal standards for universal assessment and data collection are needed.

Do rural elders have limited access to medicare hospice services?
Article Abstract:
The urban-rural differences in the use of medicare hospice benefit are examined. The differences suggest that there may be a problem with access to hospice care for rural elders and adjusting medicare policies might be a critical step to assure availability of hospice services for terminally ill beneficiaries regardless of where they live.
