Dealing with negative social exchanges in later life: Coping responses, goals and effectiveness
Article Abstract:
Older adults' coping responses, goals and effectiveness following specific negative social exchange were examined. The findings revealed the participants' coping responses and the effectiveness of these responses varied as a function of their coping goals. Results underscore the importance of considering coping responses, coping goals and effectiveness when evaluating factors that affect the impact of negative social exchanges on well-being in later life.

An item response theory of analysis of DSM-IV personality disorder criteria across younger and older age groups

Studies have found that personality disorders (PDs) decline with age. This may be because the pathology presents itself differently with age and hence remains undetected by diagnostic criteria such as those presented in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV), American Psychiatric Association, which are not designed for older people.

Social network substitution can take several different forms, with potentially distinctive effects on the well-being of widowed individuals. Three forms of substitution, formation of new social ties, rekindling of dormant ties and intensification of existing ties) varied with the duration of widowhood.
