Distinctive late-life challenges: implications for coping and well-being
Article Abstract:
A survey of two groups of older women focused on different types of life challenges. The first was residential relocation and the second was caring for a mentally retarded son or daughter. The two challenges are different in terms of how long they last, and whether they are common, and can be anticipated. Women undergoing relocation tended to score more highly on both problem-focused and emotional coping strategies, while caregivers appeared to have adjusted to their roles. Caregivers showed a sense of purpose in life, though women relocating showed more self-esteem.

Binding ties: closeness and conflict in adult children's caregiving relationships
Article Abstract:
A study of the significance of emotional ties and conflicts between adult-child caregivers and their disabled parents using a path model to find the impact on the caregivers shows that conflict mediated cognitive impairment while closeness mediated the association of cognitive impairment with both stress and effectiveness. Both positive and negative relations affect caregivers' well-being, particularly in the case of cognitive dysfunction.
