Alzheimer's disease under managed care: implications from Medicare utilization and expenditure patterns
Article Abstract:
Medicare capitation payments to managed care plans may not be sufficient to treat many elderly patients with Alzheimer's dementia. Researchers analyzed health care expenditures for 1,221,615 Medicare patients in 1992. The per capita expenditures for the 9,323 patients with Alzheimer's dementia were about twice as high as the remaining patients. Comorbidity with chronic diseases increased expenditures. About 67% of expenditures were for inpatient care.
