Depressive symptom experiences among older women: a comparison of alternative measurement approaches
Article Abstract:
A standard screening scale, a clinical diagnosis, and a latent variable measurement give different relationships between age and increase in depression. Only the latent variable measurements show a significant increase in depressive symptoms with an increase in age, particularly after 70 yrs of age. Summary measures of depression are higher in older women due to an increase in the delimited forms of distress with age. However, the summary scale scores underestimate the occurrence of Depletion Syndrome which is common in old age.
