Development and validation of a physical performace instrument for the functionally impaired elderly: the Physical Disability Index (PDI)
Article Abstract:
An observer-administered, performance-based instrument that measures the physical function of frail nursing residents without severe cognitive impairment, the Physical Disability Index (PDI), was developed and validated. The PDI has 65 items in four subscales measuring range of motion, strength, balance and mobility. Results show that the PDI as a performance-based instrument can discriminate among frail individuals with varying levels of physical function.

Cross-cultural adaptation of the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly-Screening version for use with Spanish-speaking Mexican Americans
Article Abstract:
A Spanish version of the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly-Screening version (HHIE-S) has been developed. In a test of elderly Mexican-American volunteers who took both the English and Spanish version, the correlation between the two scores was 0.89. When the test was given to a sample of older community-based Mexican-Americans, men had higher scores than women and depression and hearing impairment were associated with higher scores.
