Diabetes and dementia in long-term care
Article Abstract:
Elderly diabetics may be protected from some types of dementias. Researchers examined the link between adult onset diabetes (AODM) and dementia in a group of 476 older long-term care residents. There were 99 diabetics. The lowest rate of diabetes occurred in people with possible or probable Alzheimer's disease, while vascular dementia was associated with the highest rate of AODM. Diabetics may be more susceptible to vascular disease and dementia.
