Effects of serum vitamin B12 and folate status on episodic memory performance in very old age: a population-based study

Article Abstract:

Low levels of serum vitamin B12 and folic acid lead to deficits in both free recall and recognition of words in older adults. The results suggest that the deficit originates more from encoding difficulties than from retrieval problems, and is thus related to alterations in brain metabolism. Free recall deficits are more due to secondary memory than due to primary memory. Decreased task pacing and providing copy cues hardly affect the magnitude of memory improvement, indicating little vitamin effect on the ability to benefit from cognitive support.

Stability, growth, and decline in adult life span development of declarative memory: Cross-sectional and longitutional data from a population-based study

Article Abstract:

The adult life span development of two forms of declarative memory, memory of specific events and memory of general world knowledge are examined. The results show that age trajectories for episode and semantic memory differ and underscore the need to control for cohort and retest effects in cross-sectional and longitutional studies, respectively.

Selective adult age differences in an age-invariant multifactor model of declarative memory

Article Abstract:

Competing models of declarative memory were examined using confirmatory factor analysis. It was ascertained that the episodic memory is more age sensitive than semantic memory and that aging has differential effects within the two forms of memory.
