Elder abuse in India
Article Abstract:
There have been no empirical studies on elder abuse in India, but there is anecdotal evidence that the problem exists. Lack of research is partly responsible for the government's apathy towards this social problem. There is no specific public policy or legislation to protect the rights of the older population. Voluntary organisations have contributed towards caring for the aged. The breakup the family system and growing materialism have eroded the cultural values of the Indians. The abandonment of elders by migrants to urban areas has further exacerbated the situation.

Elder abuse in Hong Kong: a new family problem for the old East?
Article Abstract:
The Chinese ethos that pervades the society in Hong Kong lays special emphasis on the reverence of the elderly, and public policy further stresses filial responsibility. However, the negative impact of industrialization and urbanization has affected the social fabric. Old people are increasingly abandoned at the local hospitals. Two studies indicate that the vulnerable aged are the most likely to be abused. A formal policy on elder abuse is necessary.
