Government expenditures at the end of life for short- and long-stay nursing home residents: differences by hospice enrollment status

End-of-life expenditures for short- and long-stay Medicare- and Medicaid-eligible nursing home (NH) hospice and nonhospice residents are examined. The results of the study viewed that expenditure patterns for short- and long-stay NH decedents to be different; one important difference was the lower acute impatient care expenditures observed for long-stay nonhospice decedents compared with the higher inpatient expenditures for short-stay nonhospice decedents.

How does the timing of hospice referral influence hospice care in the last days of life?
Article Abstract:
Factors associated with the type of hospice care received in the last days of life and the ways in which timing of referral influences the use of continuous hospice home care and inpatient hospice care are determined. Findings suggest that continuous hospice home care in the last week of life is less likely to occur when patients have short hospice days.
