Neuropeptides: promise unfulfilled?
Article Abstract:
Scientists continue to study the functions of neuropeptides, but still cannot identify the specific role of even one neuropeptide. In 1978, 18 neuropeptides could be identified, while in 1994, over 50 have been discovered, classified as enkephalins, endorphins, dynorphins, substance P, and vasoactive intestinal peptide. Each neuropeptide has its own receptor in the brain. The general functions of each neurotransmitter have been mapped by studying their functions in the autonomic, peripheral and enteric nervous systems.

How accurate is the terminal prognosis in the minimum data set?
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the accuracy of terminal prognosis of end-stage patients in institutional long-term care (LTC). Researchers gathered data in regard to deaths 6 and 12 months after the study began. The results showed that 70.7% patients survived 6 months, and 58.5% still lived after 12 months. The results indicated that overdiagnosis is a common practice.
