Inclusion of older women in randomized clinical trials: factors associated with taking study medication in the fracture intervention trial
Article Abstract:
Factors associated with taking study medication and inclusion of older women in randomized clinical trials are discussed, based on experience from the Fracture Intervention Trial (FIT). Results with the cohort emphasize that clinical trials in older women with multiple concomitant conditions can achieve high levels of adherence. Measuring of self-rated health and depressive symptoms should be considered before randomization because some subjects may need special assistance. In the trial 6,459 women 55-80 in the first year of participation in the FIT were studied to test efficacy of alendronate (Fosamax) on fracture prevention in women with low bone mass.

A population-based osteoporosis screening program: who does not participate, and what are the consequences?
Article Abstract:
The differences in osteoporosis risk factors and rates or fracture and antiresorptive therapy use in women who did and did not participate in an osteoporosis screening program, are described. Participants had reduced hip fracture rate and increased initiation of antiresorptive therapy compared with nonparticipants.

Frailty: emergence and consequences in women aged 65 and older in the women's health initiative observational study
Article Abstract:
A method of diagnosing frailty is suggested based on a study on women aged 65 and above. Frailty indicators are used to predict other complications such as hip fracture, problems in daily activities, and death. These indicators are also used to evolve methods for preventing frailty.
