JAGS, Volume One, 1953

Article Abstract:

The author reflects on the contents of the first issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, published in 1953. Concepts of aging and substances to avoid in old age have changed over the years but reflections on the transitional nature of death and the limits of conventional medicine could have been written today. Examples of pertinent issues are included.

Commentary on special article, the aging syndrome: the aging syndrome - then and now

Article Abstract:

The article examines present-day conceptualizations of the physiology of aging and compares them to those held 50 years ago. Similarities include the ability to ameliorate the effects of disease and age-related disability; differences include the medical costs associated with poor care, as research suggests that poor care may be more expensive than proper care.
