The nighttime environment and incontinence care practices in nursing homes
Article Abstract:
Many nursing home residents are awakened frequently by noise, light and incontinence care procedures. Researchers used monitors to measure light, noise and movement in bed in a study of 225 incontinent patients in 10 nursing homes. Overall, 42% of awakenings were caused by one of these three environmental stimuli, but the percentage ranged from 24% to 66%. Noise alone accounted for 22% of awakenings overall and incontinence care resulted in an awakening 76% of the time.
