What's culture got to do with it? Excising the harmful tradition of female circumcision
Article Abstract:
Female circumcision is a cultural practice which should be opposed based on principles of universal human rights. Under a dynamic view of culture, such practices should not be maintained for reasons of tradition, but should be evaluated in terms of modern ideals and beliefs, including the social value of women's health and reproductive freedom. Legal instruments such as the Nigerian Constitution, the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women support the elimination of female circumcision.
