Lack of an association between insulin-like growth factor-I and body composition, muscle strength, physical performance or self-reported mobility among older persons with functional limitations

Article Abstract:

Insulin-like Growth Factor-I (IGF-I) may not indicate growth hormone activity in older adults, according to a growth hormone intervention trial. The growth hormone and exercise intervention study examined 155 older adults and found men that IGF-I levels declined with age in men, there was no association between IGF-I and measure of muscle strength, body composition, or physical functioning.

Growth hormone administration and exercise effects on muscle fiber type and diameter in moderately frail older people

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that subcutaneous injections of recombinant human growth hormone and a resistance exercise program increased muscle strength and number of muscle fibers in moderately frail elderly test subjects. Data were obtained from male subjects with a mean age of 71.3 years using quadricep-muscle biopsies.
