Life-sustaining treatment decisions for nursing home residents: who discusses, who decides and what is decided?
Article Abstract:
Physicians may discuss life-sustaining strategies for nursing home residents preferably with family members of their patients. Although written orders not to resuscitate routinely existed, physicians often did not involve their patients in these discussions directly. In cases without cognitive disability, efforts should be made to include nursing home patients in discussions about limits to care and end-of-life decisions.
