MediCaring: development and test marketing of a supportive care benefit for older people

Article Abstract:

Development and test marketing of a supportive care benefit for older people, experimentally dubbed MediCaring, is discussed. Preferences of older Medicare beneficiaries were assessed relative to this plan which would emphasize more home-based and supportive health care and discourage hospitalization and aggressive treatment. Most of the focus group participants older than 80 favored the program and those ages 65-74 wanted access to all possible medical treatment and saw MediCaring as suitable for people older than they were.
