Emotional well-being predicts subsequent functional independence and survival

Article Abstract:

Emotional well-being can predicts later functional independence and survival based on results of a population-based sample of 2282 Mexican Americans aged 65-99 reporting no functional limitations at baseline interview. Results showed direct relationship between positive affect scores at baseline and mobility, functional status and survival two years later, controlling for sociodemographic variables, functional status, major chronic conditions, smoking status, body mass index (BMI), drinking status and negative affect at baseline. Positive affect, or emotional well-being seems to protect the elderly against physical declines and is not the same as absence of depression or negative affect, based on the results of the study, carried out in 5 southwestern US states.
