Neighborhood deterioration and self-rated health in later life
Article Abstract:
Neighborhood deterioration has nonlinear negative effects on self-rated health in later life. Older people who have more friendship strains and financial difficulties report more physical health problems than those who have less such problems. Negative effects of environmental deterioration are evident only under severe conditions, which highlights the adaptive capacity of aging adults. These results are based on a nationwide survey of older adults.

Assessing stress-buffering effects: a cautionary note
Article Abstract:
Stress in adults is not readily relieved by continued support and would thus affect any research on beneficial effects of social support. Adults may be more likely to suffer stress despite the availability of emotional support from financial difficulties since they choose to count on their own resources. Further emotional support may even make the person feel more stressed despite an initial feeling of relief.
