Perceived health status and mortality among older men and women

Article Abstract:

Theperceived health status and mortality among older men and women were studied based on the responses in the Longitudinal Study on Aging. Demographic, socioeconomic, health status and psychosocial factors were considered in the analysis using hierarchical logistic regression. Results show that perceived health has a significant direct effect on mortality for both men and women after taking the other factors into consideration. Those men with poor health and women with fair or poor health are more likely to die than those in excellent health.

Changes in physician utilization over time among older adults

Article Abstract:

Hierarchical multivariable regression analysis of several older adults over a period of six years offers an explanation for the variations in the need for physicians. The introduction of need characteristics constitutes 8% of the variance in physician utilization, while 4.7% arises from changes in functional status. The improvement in health is not connected to the functional status, which enhances the need for physician utilization.

Changes in functional status and the risks of subsequent nursing home placement and death

Article Abstract:

The effects of changes in functional status on the risks for subsequent nursing home placement and death were studied from more than 3,000 self-respondents to the Longitudinal Study on Aging in 1984 and 1986. Results showed that the risk of being placed in a nursing home was associated with deterioration in activities of daily living and lower body function. These were also associated with the risk of dying.
