Prescribing exercise intensity for older women
Article Abstract:
Elderly women can use the guidelines recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) for determining exercise intensity. Exercise intensity is normally measured by maximal aerobic power (VO2max) and percentage of maximal heart rate (HR). In a study of 112 elderly women, VO2max varied from 55% to 91% at walking speeds of 67 to 107 m/min and HR varied from 64% to 92%. These values are within the ACSM guidelines.

Effects of exercise training added to ongoing hormone replacement therapy on bone mineral density in frail elderly women
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine whether exercise training added to ongoing hormone replacement therapy increases bone mineral density in physically frail elderly women. It was found that relatively vigorous exercise training significantly increased lumbar spine bone mineral density in frail elderly women on hormone replacement therapy.

Osteoprotective benefits of exercise: more pain, less gain?
Article Abstract:
The author supports the use of moderate physical exercise to increase bone density in older women and to prevent the onset of osteoporosis, but cautions against conclusions that vigorous exercise is less beneficial.
